Jordan Breaks Ground on US$2.5 Billion UAE-Backed Mining Railway Corridor
Jordan has broken ground on the UAE-backed US$2.5bn Aqaba–Al-Shidiyeh–Ma’an mining railway project, marking Etihad Rail’s direct operational expansion beyond the UAE.
Jordan has officially broken ground on the US$2.5bn Aqaba – Al-Shidiyeh – Ma’an Railway Project, a major freight corridor designed to connect primary mining zones with the Red Sea port of Aqaba. The venture is backed by Abu Dhabi, granting the UAE a direct financial stake in the railway alongside long-term freight revenue streams. Under the Jordan-UAE Railway Co, Etihad Rail will leverage its experience from developing and operating the UAE’s national railway network to execute and operate the project. Officials position the corridor as a strategic foundation for broader regional integration, including prospective rail links north toward Syria and Mediterranean ports, as well as connections extending into Saudi Arabia and the GCC network.
The project underscores Abu Dhabi's expanding geo-economic logistics footprint across the Levant and Red Sea trade corridors. For the infrastructure and construction market, the $2.5bn development provides a catalyst for civil contractors, rail systems providers, and bulk handling logistics firms. By linking phosphate and industrial extraction sites to maritime export facilities, the line will significantly lower logistics overheads for Jordanian bulk mineral exports while laying cross-border groundwork for eventual GCC-Levant rail integration.
The scale of civil works, earthworks, and trackbed preparation required for the mining corridor presents sustained demand for heavy earthmoving machinery, track-laying support fleets, and rock-handling equipment. Regional equipment dealers and rental providers operating across the UAE and Levant can anticipate procurement opportunities for excavators, heavy tippers, and bulldozers as construction mobilizes, alongside long-term parts, maintenance, and support contracts.
The initiative cements strategic infrastructure ties between Jordan and the UAE, signaling Etihad Rail's emergence as an international rail developer. Furthermore, the corridor establishes critical alignment for planned future connections linking Jordan to Saudi Arabia, the wider GCC rail network, and Mediterranean trade routes.
